The SLLC Duathlon is a fantastic race for both adults and children and an event that encourages everyone of all standards to take part.
A duathlon does, however, seem much more painful that a tri and I do miss the swim! My old coach used to make me do duathlons because they were so out of my comfort zone…they still are but a great test and training session.
I went into the race pretty fatigued after 2 weeks of 20 + hours of training which included some time in Mallorca training like a woman possessed for the year ahead! As a result, it’s the first time I’ve gone into a race as a training session, but I’m learning to accept the bigger picture thanks to Mark Livesey who warned me not to worry about today. (So hard to do!) So it was either going to come together as best it could or fall apart badly! Thankfully it was the first.
The race started with a 5km run which I actually enjoyed and made an effort to keep with Kirsty, a super strong athlete. I really enjoyed the challenge and we had a laugh about it at the end about the way we kept each other going and how it kept my mind occupied.
The bike course is short and fast and my legs were feeling it but I love the bike part of any race as is my favourite discipline. At each turn point I could see Kirsty gaining more distance. Frustrated of course, but kept chasing and was a real battle with my head but managed to rid the chimp! Overall I had a solid bike and was pleased with this.
The final run was tough but I managed to hold around the same pace as run 1. I finished in 2nd and was happy with this result and my splits, but more importantly had a great day out at Shona’s event and caught up with friends I haven’t seen in ages.
